In the quaint Spanish town of Buñol, a peculiar tradition transforms its streets into rivers of red pulp every last Wednesday of August. La Tomatina, the world’s largest food fight, sees participants engaging in an hour-long battle using overripe tomatoes as their weapons of choice.

What began as a spontaneous food fight among local children in 1945 has evolved into an internationally renowned celebration that attracts thousands of visitors from across the globe. The festival’s playful nature and communal atmosphere have earned it recognition as an international tourism attraction by Spain.
During the event, trucks unload an astounding 130 tonnes of overripe tomatoes along the main street, creating an arsenal for the 20,000 participants who pay €12 each to join this unique celebration. The streets become a canvas of red as people from all walks of life come together in this joyous display of organized chaos.

Safety and organization are paramount at La Tomatina. Participants are advised to wear protective goggles and old clothes, as the tomato juice will inevitably stain everything it touches. The battle only begins after the official signal, and within minutes after the hour-long noon battle concludes, the town’s streets are thoroughly hosed down, and participants shower off.
The festival’s return after a two-year pandemic pause has brought renewed energy and excitement. While some international visitors, particularly from Asian countries, remained cautious due to COVID-19 concerns, the event’s 75th anniversary celebration marked a triumphant return to form for this beloved Spanish tradition.
